Two Separate Concepts

There are two distinct routes for financially independent non-EU nationals to reside in Switzerland, and they have very different financial thresholds:

Route 1: Standard “Independent Means” / Financial Self-Sufficiency

Switzerland requires applicants to show proof of sufficient financial means to support themselves in Switzerland without relying on social assistance. The CHF 2,259/month threshold is essentially a minimum subsistence benchmark — it demonstrates you won’t be a burden on public resources.

This route grants a B permit (temporary residence), renewable annually or every few years,  it generally allows both employed and self-employed work, though you may need to register your employment or update your status with cantonal authorities.

Route 2: Lump-Sum Taxation (Forfait Fiscal) — The “Golden Visa” Route

The Switzerland Lump-Sum Tax Residency (forfait fiscal) allows qualified foreign nationals to live in Switzerland and pay taxes based on their annual living expenses instead of their worldwide income or assets.
This is not a requirement of the basic Independent Means visa — it is a separate, more prestigious program popular with high-net-worth individuals.

Key details of Lump-Sum Taxation:

  • To be eligible, an individual must be taking up residence in Switzerland for the first time or after an absence of at least ten years and must not engage in any gainful activity in Switzerland.
  • Federal law sets a floor of CHF 434,700 as the minimum taxable expenditure amount, which cantons then apply tax rates to.
  • The taxable base must not be less than seven times the annual rent paid, or the rental value of the taxpayer’s primary residence in Switzerland.
  • For non-EU/EFTA nationals, this generally requires a minimum total tax contribution of CHF 200,000 per year, depending on the canton and individual profile.
  • The tax rate applied to the taxable base depends on the selected canton’s ordinary tax rate and could vary from 22% to 45%.

Important: Lump-sum taxation has been abolished in several cantons, including Basel Landschaft, Basel Stadt, Zurich, Schaffhausen, and Appenzell Ausserrhoden. Canton selection matters.

That said, we can assist you with the Independent Means application. The process involves:

  1. Applying for a Type D long-stay national visa at the Swiss consulate
  2. Proving financial independence (bank statements, investment/pension income)
  3. Securing Swiss health insurance
  4. Providing proof of accommodation in Switzerland
  5. Upon arrival, registering with the cantonal migration office and the Alien Control Police Department
  6. Spending at least six months per year in Switzerland to maintain the permit

Prima di un espatrio in uno dei molti Stati da noi proposti, organizziamo un appuntamento individuale.

L'appuntamento consiste nelle seguenti attività:

  1. analizzare le tue aspettative;
  2. valutare la tua situazione pre-espatrio ed eventuali criticità/ostacoli;
  3. stabilire la fattibilità del tuo trasferimento all'estero;
  4. individuare i pro e i contro della destinazione (una o più) in merito alle tematiche più varie: tassazione, affitti, costo della vita, clima, sicurezza, assistenza sanitaria, etc;
